Chaminade 10 - Lafayette 2

In the roughest game to date, the Red Devils showed mental toughness and tenacity in defeating the Lafayette Lancers 10-2. The referees did not call many ordinary fouls and missed (in my opinion) a lot of kickout calls. So by extension, Lafayette was allowed to play rough with our boys. The Lancers were a physical team that sometimes took the physical play too far. Some of it is the way they were coached, but the referees were in control of the game and they should have called more fouls when the game was getting chippy. But, I am proud to say that the boys didn't use the lack of fouls as an excuse or as a crutch. A tell-tale sign of the quality of the Red Devils' character is their refusal to give in to the dirtiness and retaliate. Even when Danny Faust's man tried to kick him in the face, Danny just kept playing. I am very proud of the way the Red Devils carried themselves yesterday.

A couple really cool things did happen in the game, though. Michael Kubik attempted a left-handed shot...although it hit the goalie in the chest, I still thought it was awesome. Danny Faust got a steal and subsequently drove with the ball to 7M with a man on his back, then kicked it out to the wing, continued his drive (with defender still in tow) got the ball back at 3M and scored. A give-and-go. It was a thing of beauty. Also, we have a new season high in steals: 29!

Kevin Arnold drew a kickout because he got kicked intentionally in the chest. Intentional you say? Isn't that a brutality? No says the referee, if he had been kicked in the face then that would have been a brutality. Um, what? So we aren't punishing people on intent, just on result? So why is attempted murder illegal? According to Mr. Referee, if you didn't kill the guy, then you didn't commit a crime.

That pretty much goes against everything I believe in.

Things that went right:

  • Not retaliating to dirty play
  • Not disrespecting the referees (that's my job)
  • Playing water polo the right way

Things that went not so right:

  • Offensive execution - the machine breaks down to easily and we start randomly swimming. It's like the inmates are running the asylum sometimes.
  • Shot selection
  • 6-on-5
